The song "Scared to Lose" is not only a happy-go-lucky song that makes you want to dance around and sing your heart out, but it is written by a beloved alumni of Yarmouth High, Conner Pearl. This is not the first song Pearl has released, though. Earlier this year he debuted his music career with another single, "Subliminal Feeling." Both of these songs are fun, creative and catchy, and along with his friends, Conner has made some amazing music for the world to hear.
Conner Pearl graduated Yarmouth High School in 2017, and he and his family had lived here since before he was born. During Conner’s time as a high school student, he participated in many extracurricular activities such as starring as the lead in many school plays, as well as participating in a town wide competition, Yarmouth's Got Talent, which is a spinoff of popular shows such as America's Got Talent, or Britain's Got Talent.
Pearl says that Yarmouth was "a great place to grow up, and the community was always so nurturing and supportive of the arts." He goes on to say how Yarmouth "definitely prepared me for college. A lot of times when people at [college] are complaining about work load or difficulty, I feel ready to take it on… A lot of times college even feels easier compared to how intense Yarmouth was academically."
Now, Conner is pursuing his love for music as a senior at "USC — California not South Carolina." (I guess he needed to make it very clear that he did not live in South Carolina.) Inspiration for his newest song struck Conner as he sat in his backyard in Carolina. Pearl talks a lot about love in his songs, and it was in his backyard that he realized he was truly in love with someone. I love the way this feeling is brought out very well in this song, as it sucks you into the anxious shock of losing something that makes you truly happy. It was also in this backyard that he shot the cover for his first single, "Subliminal Feeling," which evidently is also about being in love.
In Conners most recent Instagram post (you can follow him @connerapearl), he walks us through the process of creating "Scared to Lose." He says that he knew what the melody would be "after it woke me up one night from a dream." These notes stuck with Conner while he waited for the lyrics to "fit into my life perfectly," as the melody had done. The lyrics did come to him, "In a fleeting moment… at the exact time I realized I was in love. That was the first thought that popped into my head when I realized it… the fear of it ever ending." It was after that moment that Conner knew that this song was going to be his next.
"In a fleeting moment… at the exact time I realized I was in love."
One of the things I love about Pearls music is the emotional connection that I am able to have with it. As a highschool student who is going through the ebb and flow of it all, songs that convey this emotion so clearly are very comforting because of how relatable the message is. My favorite part of this song is a 20-ish second ending that completely encapsulates, to me, the emotion of love and all the other things that can come with it.
Conner Pearl is truly proving himself to be a singer/songwriter who not only cares about his music, but writes about things that are very personal to him. Both of Pearl's songs are amazing to listen to, not just because they make you want to sing and dance, but because they give you a glimpse into the life of the artist; and to me, that is what makes art so beautiful.
