In the last 4 years Donald Trump has failed to lead the American people into the future and to build toward equality and unity between race and gender. Donald Trump should not be remembered in the history books as an effective president of the United states because he was a divisive leader who didn't bring the American people together but divided them.
Let’s start by looking at the most recent situation during the presidential debate when he was told to address the proud boys (a white supremacists group) “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by,” Trump responded. He could have used a better choice of words. Telling them to stand by “to be or to get ready to act” instead of stand back builds on to the many assumptions of him being a racist president. It showed proof on live television of how incapable he is to hide his racist image from the American people.
Also him being insensitive to the Black Lives Matter protest not only proving once again that he's racist in response to him commenting about the black lives matter protest. Calling protesters “thugs” after the death of George Floyd shows that he does not understand the hurt that he is inflicting on not only black Americans but white Americans as well. Trump suppresses our right to speak out by calling protestors thugs and looters making it seem as if our right to freedom of speech is a crime. Trump is unable to set a good example to the kids who are watching him at home, who might be inspired to be president one day. What kind of president is that?
At first I thought it would have been a good idea to talk about how we should erase him from the history books all together, but now I have realized it's good to keep him in there so that we can reflect on how we pick our future presidents in the future, leaders of our great nation.
I feel like we slowly started to acknowledge what kind of President he was. Especially on the fact that for over 200 years, maybe even more, there hasn't been a president to not comply through smooth transfer of power. Yet Donald Trump chose to question the American people and his own government. Trying to find a way to stay in power, even when he was voted out of office showing disrespect to one of our founding fathers and our first president George Washington who leads us in the example of how necessary to our democracy a smooth transfer of power is. When Washington’s presidency ended, he stepped aside for the next president. The ideas the Founding Fathers built the country on was real actions, not just words. A smooth transfer of power shows that all Americans as a nation move together and that we are not weak and moved by selfish acts towards power by a few.
Donald Trump is an example of the kind of leader we cannot afford to have again if we're going to move into the future as a great nation. A nation that we can shape to be remembered as a nation that comes together, not a nation that split in half between Republicans and Democrats, Black and White. Donald Trump is a wake-up call for us Americans. Let Donald Trump be America's last sin.
