Homecoming cancelled at yhs

This year at Yarmouth High School many students found themselves wondering where our homecoming went. This fall, due to changes in the athletic administration, there will be no events besides the official sports games. Former Athletic Director Susan Robbins was the head of the spirit committee and organized all extra homecoming activities for students to attend throughout the week during her time at YHS. The events Yarmouth would hold annually were a pep rally, bonfire, and the Homecoming dance. With our new athletic trainer, David Creech, the committee is not yet up and running.
I spoke with students at Yarmouth and many had not even realized homecoming was cancelled. Many students said they wouldn’t attend homecoming activities even if they were provided. I wondered if there is a lack of school spirit at Yarmouth. Quick to dismiss this was junior Margaret McNeil who said that “more people attend the actual homecoming games than the events that celebrated homecoming.”
An important idea was brought up in my interview with McNeil when she said: “I think there are a lot of new kids this year, so a dance would be nice so they can hang out with everyone and maybe make new friends, and even if you’ve been at Yarmouth awhile, it’s just fun.” Homecoming is at a very crucial part of the school year when students get back into the swing of things and accustomed to the new school year. For new students, homecoming events may feel welcoming to our school and to participate in school activities outside the classroom.
